RIDING LESSON F.A.Q.

1. Can I take lessons and not own a horse that is in Training at NWS?

Yes we offer a Lesson Program where you use our horses. Our lesson horses are experienced and can carry riders at different levels. This is an advantage to you. As you improve your skills you can move up to more advanced horses. Many riding/training facilities do not offer the selection of lesson horses as NWS. This also allows you the opportunity to show at the entry level Academy Program as well. You will have a lot of choice to model your riding program to your needs. (Select the “Lesson Program” menu button for more information about the Lesson and Academy programs.)

2. What styles of riding do you train and teach?

We start all new riders in a balanced seat. As a rider progresses we make the necessary changes to meet the goals of a rider whether it be Saddleseat, Western, or Huntseat on the flat. If riding is not your "thing", we have many lesson horses that can be used in driving lessons. Our lessons always teach balance and control of the horse which is a MUST for trail riding.

3. How old to you have to be to ride?

We do not have age limits. We do offer tiny tot lessons. On very young children they will be evaluated and a decision will be made together with the parents to determine if they are ready for lessons.

4. Do I need to provide a helmet for my lessons?

For the first few lessons we have helmets available. If you continue to ride we recommend you purchase your own and have it fitted properly to you

5. What type of clothes/shoes do I need to wear to take riding lessons?

First and foremost we require long pants regardless of the weather. Shorts are not permitted. We recommend boots but for the first lesson a hard soled shoe with heel is permitted. We will help you find appropriate boots.

6. Do you offer group lessons?

We require all riders to ride in private lessons until we have fully assessed their riding capabilities. Group lessons are available but on a limited basis at this time.

7. Can we become more involved than just riding?

Yes, our instructors are more than willing to teach you the basics of handling and grooming a horse but this needs to be scheduled before the lesson so appropriate time is allotted for you.

8. Are there showing opportunities available for lesson students?

While no one is required to show, we do have a series of tournament shows that are designed for individuals for taking lessons on a stable owned horse.

9. Can I get lessons when you are at a show and I do not go?

Yes, NWS has instructors available that do not typically go to horse shows. You may schedule a lesson with one of them.
